Also known as periodontal disease or periodontitis, gum disease is the leading cause of American adults losing their teeth. If gum disease does not receive timely professional attention, it will continue to get worse and lead to serious tooth loss and jawbone damage. To prevent gum disease from developing, Dr. Gregg Balis offers three basic tips.

  1. Practice a great oral hygiene routine every day. Gum disease starts as irritation of the gum tissue caused by plaque buildup along the gum line. To reduce your risk of developing gum disease, you must remove plaque from your teeth on a daily basis by brushing and flossing your teeth and rinsing your mouth with mouthwash.
  2. Visit the dentist twice a year and as needed. Gum disease develops when gingivitis (the aforementioned gum irritation) is not treated by a dental professional. Visiting the dentist twice a year and when you notice a change in your dental health both improves dental health and lowers your risk of gum disease. Our hygienist team will examine your smile for problem areas and perform a scaling process to remove any hardened.
  3. Eat a healthy, tooth-friendly diet. The quality of your dental health directly correlates with the foods you eat. For example, if you eat a lot of sugary and acidic food and drink a lot of soda, there is a very good chance you will develop gum disease. Health experts have tested the link between gum disease and food and proven it multiple times.
